The name Humes has been synonymous with the manufacture of Steel Reinforced Precast concrete products since early last century. Walter Hume invented and patented revolutionary method of making pipes. By spinning pipe moulds he utilised centrifugal force to produce pipes of great strength and durability. The process demanded the development of high quality concrete using the best raw materials. This technology is now used throughout Australia and several countries around the world.
In 1988, Humes became part of the Readymix Group, itself a subsidiary of the Australian based conglomerate, CSR Limited. Then in 2003 Rinker Group was established following the demerger of the various building businesses of CSR Limited. Rinker is a focused heavy building materials group - one of the top 10 in the world - comprising Rinker Materials Corporation in the US and the Readymix and Humes businesses in Australia and Asia.

Humes operations are spread over 18 manufacturing locations throughout Australia, strategically located to respond quickly to local demand, in both city and country areas.

Humes prides itself on its strengths in design and engineering services, and to providing the most economic total solutions. The combination of Humes’ technical expertise with its experience from decades of concrete product manufacture continues to keep it at the forefront in innovation and design in the market place.

Major emphasis has been in the areas of drainage, sewerage and transport infrastructure with significant activity in irrigation, environmental, building and resource projects. From traditional steel reinforced concrete pipes to purpose designed products like Humeceptor™ and one and two piece Arch structures.

The company produces an extensive range of steel reinforced precast concrete products pipes, pumpwells, maintenance holes, and drainage and sewerage appurtenances, retaining walls, rural products, arches and bridge beams.

Readymix produces concrete pipe and reinforced concrete products through its Humes business with production capacity in excess of a million tonnes a year. As at 31 March 2003, Humes operated 18 plants producing concrete pipes, precast concrete products including prestressed beams, stormwater pollution prevention devices and other environmental products, concrete sleepers and flooring products.

Concrete pipe and other precast concrete products used in the Australian civil infrastructure market was estimated to be 1.5 million tonnes in calendar year 2001, generating more than A$700 million in revenue.
